Pediatric cardiology appointment: an update on Vivian's heart

Wednesday, June 14, 2017

Last week we had a follow-up appointment at the pediatric cardiologist for Vivi's heart. She was born with two small holes in her heart. She has a ventricular septal defect (VSD), a hole between the bottom two chambers of the heart, and a patent foramen ovale (PFO), a hole between the upper two chambers of the heart.

When we first got there they had to take all her vitals then it was time for her EKG. Her first appointment was when she was about 2 weeks old and she hated having the EKG done. This time she was an angel! The hardest part was trying to keep her still so it could get an accurate reading of the electrical activity of her heart. The worst part was peeling those super sticky pads off her sweet, delicate skin. Those things hurt!

After her EKG it was time for an echocardiogram, which is just an ultrasound of the heart. I laid on the table with her and fed her a bottle to keep her still. She did so great! Then we met with the doctor and great news... both holes are closing like they should! He said her EKG was totally normal, he could barely see the VSD and the PFO was getting smaller. All good things! We will go back for another check-up in a few months.

In the scheme of things, her minor heart problems are nothing compared to some of the health scares people go through with their babies. It truly makes me realize how blessed we are to have a healthy baby and my heart goes out to all the mommas that are dealing with sicknesses and health problems. We are so very thankful that our baby girl is happy and healthy!

  1. So glad that everything went ok and things are closing like they should! What a doll baby she is! One of my best friends is due next month with a baby girl who has HLHS. I've learned a lot about CHD since she got the diagnosis.

  9. SO glad to hear the holes are closing up!!!! We thought my husband had a PFO last year and spent numerous days in various hospitals having EKGs, echocardiograms, heart monitors, and bubble studies done and that was scary with my husband, I can't imagine going through any of that with a my baby. She is just adorable! :)

  10. It's always scary when our babies have any health problems, but you are right... we have to keep it all in perspective sometimes. I'm so glad that she is healing up perfectly and maybe allowing Mama to sleep a little easier :)
